American Alligator - Alligator mississippiensis. Fairly common in many Coastal Plain lakes, rivers, and associated aquatic habitats, and common in Mobile - Tensaw Delta. Generally absent above Fall Line Hills except for an introduced Tennessee River population near Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge. Alligators have rebounded remarkably from low numbers since 1960s due to federal and state protection. Lowest Conservation Concern.
