1,236 Student Archers Compete in NASP State Championship

The sound of the opening whistle sent hundreds of arrows zipping toward their targets at the National Archery in the Schools (NASP) State Championship in Montgomery, Ala., on Friday, April 6. By the end of the competition, 54 youth archery teams had qualified to attend the NASP Eastern National Championship on May 10-12, in Louisville, Ky. Of those qualifying teams, 41 have registered to attend the national event.

The sound of the opening whistle sent hundreds of arrows zipping toward their targets at the National Archery in the Schools (NASP) State Championship in Montgomery, Ala., on Friday, April 6. By the end of the competition, 54 youth archery teams had qualified to attend the NASP Eastern National Championship on May 10-12, in Louisville, Ky. Of those qualifying teams, 41 have registered to attend the national event.

黑料天堂鈥檚 archery program is coordinated by the 黑料天堂 (ADCNR) through partnerships with various schools and supporting organizations in the state. 黑料天堂 NASP is an affiliate of the national program and promotes discipline, self-esteem, and life skills for students in grades 4-12.

Marisa Futral, NASP coordinator for the ADCNR Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries Division (WFF), said the state championship is the culmination of nine regional qualifying events.

鈥淭housands of archers competed in regional tournaments for a chance to draw their bows in the state championship,鈥 Futral said. 鈥淚鈥檓 thrilled to see so many youth excited about archery and hope they continue in the sport. Congrats to all the archers and good luck at nationals!鈥

Scoring for the event is based on Olympic-style, target archery in three divisions 鈥 elementary, middle and high school. Competition is on team and individual levels. Perfect scores are 3,600 points for teams and 300 for individuals.

2.    Buckhorn High, New Market, Ala., with a score of 3,355.

3.    Ashville High, Ashville, Ala., with a score of 3,344.

1.    Cullman Middle, Cullman, Ala., with a score of 3,344.

2.    Vinemont Middle, Vinemont, Ala., with a score of 3,321.

3.    Buckhorn Middle, New Market, Ala., with a score of 3,272.

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL DIVISION

1.    East Elementary, Cullman, Ala., with a score of 3,242.

2.    Dixon Elementary, Irvington, Ala., with a score of 3,219.

3.    Saraland Elementary, Saraland, Ala., with a score of 3,035.

2.    Katherine Michael, Foley High, with a score of 292.
